Sharing Farmer Stories Helps Rural Iowa
Tuesday Apr 11, 2023
Tuesday Apr 11, 2023
The GROW Podcast hosts Andrew Wheeler from the Iowa Farm Bureau to talk about how farmers can bridge their connection to consumers. The best way to tell farmer stories is to do it yourself! Nobody is going to tell your story better than you. The reputation of farming and ag have been skewed in the public eye and it’s up to farmers to be transparent about their operation and invite discourse about their farming practices — all in the name of education.

The Ultimate Breakdown of Fertilizer and Chemical Markets — Agronomy Episode
Thursday Mar 02, 2023
Thursday Mar 02, 2023
John King brings the technical breakdown in the ever-changing fertilizer and chemical markets. The fertilizer market has been on the downturn while the Ukraine-Russia conflict, paired with Europe's mild winter, has lessened Europe’s need to purchase product from other countries. Internationally, markets have been waiting for India to tender urea, which has come to fruition this week. Supply on the fungicide market is tight; get your chemical portfolio penned in as soon as possible. Overall, the market is in a transitional period. Keep in contact with your local supplier and know that there is little downside left in the next 30 days. As always, give the GROW Solutions Center a call or text if you have any prep planting questions (515) 800-GROW (4769).
The Farmer of the Future is well-equipped for 2023 with updated Landus locations. Our Mitchellville, Rake, and Boone facilities have undergone massive updates in 2022 and are nearing completion ahead of the 2023 planting season. 100% -- The Metric That Matters – Grain Episode
Thursday Feb 16, 2023
Thursday Feb 16, 2023
On this episode of the GROW Podcast, host Ashley Kaldenberg sits down with Derek Hommer, a risk management consultant from Nationwide, and Ahad Mujeeb, a EHS team member from Landus to talk about grain bin safety. February 19 – 25 is grain bin safety week, and given our farmers and team members are in contact with grain bins regularly, we felt it was important to stop and take a minute to remind listeners to be mindful of the dangers and how to stay safe.
Derek and Ahad offered numerous tips, but most importantly a zero entrance stance. If we avoid entering grain bins there is a 100% chance that an engulfment or entrapment accident will happen. Listen now for suggestions on avoiding entry and other ways to stay safe when it comes to grain bins and other safety hazards as we prep for planting.

Tar Spot & The Plant Factory – Agronomy Episode
Wednesday Dec 28, 2022
Wednesday Dec 28, 2022
Tar spot is spreading into and being seen in more and more of Iowa. On this podcast, Meaghan Anderson a Field Agronomist with Iowa State University Extension, joins host, John King, and Landus Technical Agronomist, Dan Bjorklund to talk through this evolving disease. Meaghan explains the discovery of Tar Spot in Iowa and how we’ve seen the disease prevalence spread. The group dives into what tar spot is and how it impacts the crop. They talk through the optimal growing conditions for tar spot and timing for most impact. Even better though, a large portion of the discussion focuses on action and what can be done to help farmers manage the disease.
The product of the month segment this episode focuses on Landus’ recommendation for how to handle tar spot and what products and treatment timing. One key takeaway from this section, was to make sure to have a plan and plan ahead. John warns that product supply could be tight and how an advanced strategy will be key.
Meaghan provided a variety of resources to share with our listeners (listed below). Dan also encouraged listeners to look into the Precision Ag High Yield Learning Groups being offered by Landus that will explore tar spot and provide data specific to your operation.

Soybeans and the Biltmore Estate – Grain Episode
Tuesday Nov 01, 2022
Tuesday Nov 01, 2022
You are probably asking yourself what soybeans and the Biltmore Estate have to do with each other. Take a listen to this episode to find out and hear other interesting insights and intel from podcast guest, Grant Kimberley, Senior Director of Market Development at the Iowa Soybean Association (@IowaSoybeans).
Host, Ashley Kaldenberg, kicks off the podcast with a question on everyone’s mind. What is up with soybeans? Grant shares that some big things are happening with soybeans, from soybean crush plants to renewable fuels, soybean meal to exports, research to yield growth, and more.
Grant highlights the increase in 16 new crush plants and the drive for additional biofuels and renewable diesel. With the increase in oil, the offset is additional soybean meal. He talks about the advantage that domestic livestock producers should see as well as the opportunity for exports. Growth in soybean meal in rations, but also an increase in poultry and growth of aquaculture. There are also opportunities for diversified uses for soy-based products, aka Biltmore Estate connection!
The episode includes a discussion around a look at corn and soybean planting. An act of the Iowa Soybean Association is to support research and they are looking at genetics and soybean yield growth. Kimberley discusses urbanization and how we’ve gone from growing to consuming, and therefore need to figure out how to yield more and reminds listeners that soybean is an easy-access protein for livestock rations.
Ashley wraps up the episode by getting Grant’s thoughts on some of the geopolitical unrest and China. Grant outlines the resources in place and how the industry in China plays a large role in a continued positive collaboration to maintain levels of export.

Red October – Agronomy Episode
Tuesday Oct 11, 2022
Tuesday Oct 11, 2022
On this episode, host John King and agronomist Dan Bjorklund sit down and talk about what they are seeing in fields and the market as harvest begins. From soybean cyst nematode to updates on the fertilizer market, this episode has you covered.
Dan spends time talking through soybean cyst nematode and how we must consider tolerance versus resistance and look at seed selection that offers both offensive combined with defensive as a path to dealing with this issue. Please click here to view the Landus Seed Guide and the genetics mentioned by Dan.
Also discussed was a growing concern -- tar spot. Dan and John explore thoughts on the impact of tar spot on this year’s yield and Landus’ approach for furthering research into tar spot at our Farnhamville research test plots. We will have a recommendation going into next year as to what we feel will be the best solution to manage tar spot. The Landus YouTube channel offers additional resources.
The fertilizer market is still messy and we are impacted by plants not working, lack of supply, the war, and the price of natural gas. John encourages listeners and Landus farmers to stay on top of their fertilizer needs by keeping in communication with their Landus representative or the GROW Solutions Center.
Finally, the episode closed with the Product of the Month. This time we featured YaraVita® PROCOTE™ and Titan® XC. This winning combination will maximize your production potential. Titan XC is used in dry fertilizer blends and helps growers get more out of their applied P & K fertilizers by increasing nutrient availability.
